Resolved: 5. The Work of My Life

The Work of My Life

This post is part of the Resolved series: a collection of 21 personal resolutions that I’m writing/preaching to myself.

If you’d like a little more information, please visit this introduction to the Resolved series.

Resolution #5

Resolved, to ask God for the grace to make loving Him and delighting in Him the work of my life.

What and Why?

Here’s where I explain what I mean and why it matters.

Where I Stole This From

A prayer from Richard Baxter’s The Saints’ Everlasting Rest:

“May the Living God, who is the portion and rest of the saints, make these our carnal minds so spiritual, and our earthly hearts so heavenly, that loving Him, and delighting in Him, may be the work of our lives.”

I lifted this quote from John Piper’s amazing book, Desiring God[affiliate link.] This book has seriously challenged and encouraged my faith in ways that I can’t even begin to explain. For those desiring to find their true and perfect happiness in God, this is a must read.

Asking For God’s Grace

By my own power, I will fail at each and every one of these resolutions. I may be able to keep them going for a while on my own, but in the end I am weak. It’s only by God’s grace and by His power that I could hope to run this race.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8 ESV

If you want to live a “radical” life, then you need the help of a “radical” God.

Loving and Delighting in Him

Piper’s ongoing theme in this book and in his life of ministry is this:

God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.

To pursue our utmost satisfaction in God is to look for and find complete, perfect joy in Him alone. To love Him is to treasure His Son and give Him everything; not just once, but continually. To delight in Him is to find a blissful peace in His sovereign care, even when my present circumstances would dictate otherwise.

The Work of My Life

Wether its work or play, full-time ministry or not, I want all of my life to be committed to this end. If the truest and purest form of joy exists only in God, then why waste my time chasing shadows of it apart from Him?

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. ” Colossians 3:23,24 ESV

How and When?

Here’s where I look at ways to practically apply this resolution to my life.

  1. When I’m faced with a desire to sin, to think of and embrace the everlasting joy that would surpass any temporary joy that I could be pursuing.
  2. I need to approach every blessing of conviction, act of submission, and opportunity to repent as a chance to experience more of Him and, consequently, a happier and more full joy in Him.

That’s it for resolution #5. If you’d like to keep up with this series, feel free to click one of the links below and subscribe to my RSS feed.
