Peace Treaty

You will never annihilate the resistance.

I hope that doesn’t scare you or discourage you, but it is the truth. It will always be there. What we can do, however, is learn to subdue and make our peace with it. In the end, we can actually find the resistance to be a good thing when we understand how to control it.

Rational Battle PlanOn Friday, we fought the irrational side of the battle against resistance.

Today we’re going to look at the more tangible, rational side of the fight. This approach will be less “touchy, feely” and more “go on and do it.”

Your Battle vs. the Resistance

Enough talk.

We’ve spent plenty of time dissecting and analyzing the varying qualities of the resistance. Yesterday, you gathered the intelligence needed for the fight.

Now its time for you to stand up and subdue the monster. Are you ready to go?

You vs the Resistance - Gathering IntelligenceSo you’ve decided to declare war on the resistance and move towards overcoming it.

That’s great. Before we can attack, we’ve got to know exactly what we’re dealing with. The first question to ask is whether your resistance is irrational or rational.

Odds are, it’ll be a mixture of both.

I need this as much as you do…

You’ve been dreaming, scheming, pondering, and fantasizing about your new project. You’ve been playing out what if scenarios in your head. You can clearly see what your world will look like after you make this real. There’s only one thing standing in your way:

Monday Kick In the Pants: Are You Rationalizing the Irrational?

Kick in the PantsWe’ve got something we want to do; an idea that just has to become real. However, there is this resistance that’s stopping us from moving forward.

The resistance can be irrational; we’ve got negative thoughts kicking around, self-doubt, and limiting beliefs that are holding us down. Or, the resistance is rational; we’ve got a few adverse conditions that need to be resolved before we can carry on. Knowing the difference helps us figure out how to deal with it.

Unfortunately, this happy little distinction is not so black and white. Each and every one of us, myself included, has a nasty tendency of taking irrational fears and masking them as rational. It takes a great deal of introspection and self-discipline to discern the difference.

3 Steps to Identifying Rational vs Irrational Resistance

3 Steps to Identifying Irrational vs. Rational ResistanceSo far, we’ve discussed two types of resistance.

The first was physical, in which we experience things such as sleepiness, anxiety, hunger, etc. We can also experience spiritual resistance, which attacks our mental well being and psyche.

Today, I’d like to talk about an external form of resistance that I’ll call rational resistance. I would classify physical and spiritual resistance as irrational, because they are based on emotions. Rational resistance, however, is based upon facts and circumstances.

spiritual resistance

Here I am again, 3 PM and I have some more difficult phone calls to make. In addition to the physical component we discussed yesterday, I’m experiencing a different kind of resistance. This kind is stealthy. Its effects are devastating.

I want to pick up that phone, but a crazy little voice in my head starts talking:

  • Stop trying. They’re going to reject you.
  • Give it up. You’re not good enough for this.
  • Don’t even bother. You’re a failure.

When The Resistance Gets PhysicalIt’s 3 PM and I’m staring at my to-do list. There are 2 phone calls on there that I really don’t want to make.

Confession. I’m terrified of the phone…
says the REALTOR.

One call is to a potential client who I don’t know too well and may not want to hear from me. The other is to set an appointment to go list a home in an area I’m not comfortable with just yet.

  • I’m feeling a little unsettled, so I put on some music.
  • I’m feeling a little sleepy, so I go and grab a cup of coffee.
  • I’m feeling a little hungry, so I pick up a candy bar.

Eventually, I force myself make the phone calls, but waste tons of time getting there. That’s one of my struggles. Not every day, but some. Your struggle probably looks a little different.

The Resistance is Real

If you’ve read Steven Pressfield’s The War of Art, you’ll recognize some of these themes.

When I decided to leave the music industry, I expected life to get easier. I was ready to convert my wasted hours on the road into fruitful hours in an office. I thought that I could start my own business, let everyone know about it, lean back and coast from there.

Needless to say, I was wrong.
